What our customers are saying

  • Accommodating, friendly and welcoming staff. Dealt with 9 people and a dog, refilled our waterbottles, found us blankets when we were cold. Two gorgeous golden retrievers to stroke on your way to the loo! Incredible food, so unbelievably tasty. Great prices and great options for all (including an amazing stuffed aubergine for vegetarians.) But overall the best thing was the service and smiles from all staff. Thank you! From the mottley crew with the big fluff ball dog!

4 star ratingDelicious meal We had a meal here whilst staying at the nearby Newhouse Farm Cottages. Suitable Covid precautions had been put in place – a bell to ring when you arrived so you could be met at the door, hand sanitiser, only certain tables being used… …As we had such a good experience, we ordered take-out lasagne the following evening which was also very nice.

  • 5 star ratingWould recommend Popped in for dinner as we were staying away for a weekend break nearby. Couldn’t fault, greeted straight away, felt very welcome and was invited to look around the snug area. Choose to eat in the bar area but also has nice dining area. Can’t fault the food, except after large portions, I couldn’t fit in pudding! The kids did though! Enjoyable food and a good evening, thank you.

5 star ratingA Swift Pint Popped in for quick pint whilst waiting for the pizza order to be cooked in the mobile
wood fire oven van in the square.
An amazing quirky local with a fine selection of ale etc

4 star ratingA good all-rounder This is largely a family-run pub and you get a great welcome here from the landlord and all the staff. Even our little dog was welcomed with open arms. There was a good selection of home-cooked foods, all with an authentic style that had been carefully researched. We went with our instincts and enjoyed the meals we were brought. There is a great selection of beers and cheeses too. It wasn’t particularly cheap, but is definitely cheerful.

  • Very good landlord and landlady, well kept cellar, food very good also. If you want a nice lunch time meal and chat go early as the pub closes at 2 30 in the week in the winter, I don't know about the weekend, will definitely visit again.

    Norman Bowles

Le petit déjeuner et les desserts, la convivialité..

Cosy, quirky and friendly. Went in for dinner with our kids and everyone was very happy with their food. Really nice to have excellent choices for children and vegetarians and the only issue I had with the food was that the dessert menu was a list of my absolute favourite puddings, and I was plunged into pudding turmoil argh!Brilliant place. You won't be disappointed.

  • 4 star ratingfirst pub visit for my kids we were visiting Devon and i wanted my kids to have a real pub food experience. The Mitre Inn did not disapoint. The food and service was great, even if we came in just before kitchen closing time.

    Yvonne D

5 star ratingA lovely first visit We had lunch here today and came away promising ourselves that we would return! Tripadvisor came up trumps, recommending it as somewhere not too far from home, and we loved everything about The Mitre and its fantastic food. Plenty of choice – and those who had it said the hake was “to die for” – and sensibly sized portions. My only complaint was that the time of year was wrong for me to spend time in the delightful “snug” just off the bar…… roll on winter for that! Thank you all concerned for a memorable meal – and lashings of ginger beer!

5 star ratingA celebration meal to remember We took twelve close friends for a special celebration as this is one of our favourite places to eat. Every meal was cooked to perfection (I don’t know how Barbara does it for so many) and served in the lovely dining room. The staff who served us worked very hard and we were not hurried. A lot of thought goes into the dishes which offer a good choice and fish/vegetarian lovers are well catered for too. This is much more than pub grub.u

We were only in the area for one night but hoping to return for longer next summer we will definitely return there.

  • 4 star ratingGood lunch We were looking for a venue half way between us in Cornwall and relatives from Bristol area to meet up and chose the Mitre Inn by chance. We were not disappointed. We had lunch which was tasty, plentiful and good value. Our dog was made welcome and given a treat – thank you. Will call again if in the area.

5 star ratingFamily Sunday Lunch The interior of the Mitre Inn is lovely. We were shown to a table and the waitress was very prompt taking food and drinks orders. One of the best roast dinners we have had in a while in a pub. Piping hot. Between us we had 3 different meats and all were really tender. Lovely choice of fresh vegetables. We were so full we couldn’t eat dessert. Would definitely recommend this restaurant

5 star ratingVery pleasant We visited the pub as a large group so had the back room to ourselves having read past reviews I was a little cautious and was expecting the worse however we were greeted with a smile and staff were very friendly and the food was cooked to a very good standard and food was delivered hot and in table order my steak was cooked perfectly and well presented
There was also a good selection of drinks at the bar.
Thank you for a very enjoyable evening

  • 5 star ratingGreat service and helpfu staff We ate here whilst on holiday nearby. We had a good meal, reasonably priced. Staff were friendly and particularly welcoming of our children. I am veggie, and there was a good choice of meals for me.
Once home we realised that our son had left a fleece somewhere on holiday. We phoned the Mitre Inn, who immediately located the lost property. The manager was extremely helpful and immediately arranged to post the item to us and phoned to let us know when this was done….great service, thank you!

  • 5 star ratingStumbled upon this by accident – what a great find! I was with a small group of friends, looking for a pub for some lunch, happened upon this one, and we were all very pleased with it. Quite a few menus and choices. We were advised that the kitchen would be closing in 10 minutes and which was the best menu to choose from. Excellent food, good service, and a very pleasant village pub. We did not stay here, only ate lunch and had a drink, so I cannot comment on the accommodation.

    Annabel M

5 star ratingGreat food & good service We thought we would spend our first evening In Witheridge at The Mitre Inn. We are pleased that we did!

4 star ratingFriendly pub, helpful owner Pub owner went out of her way to give us refreshments at an outdoor table when pub itself was closed. We also enjoyed an Indian meal here!

  • 5 star ratingExcellent in all respects We have been staying in cottages nearby on holiday. We have eaten here on three occasions and found it excellent in all respects. On one occasion they catered for a party of eighteen of us at short notice. Tonight my wife and father-in-law went in for the weekly curry night. We had three beautifully cooked curries. Also, they were excellent value as there is a special offer of two curries for £18.50 – exceptional value. The food was served very quickly and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Strongly recommended.

    Jeffrey D

  • 4 star ratingTwo Moors Way We were made very welcome on our overnight stop, walking the 2 Moors Way. A very creative menu, with tappas as a starter, then strips of smoked fish. Really great with lovely, attentive waitresses and bar staff. The room was basic but very suitable for our needs. Then a full English breakfast the next morning. This pub is obviously the heart of the community. Keep up the good work!

4 star ratingPub grub with a smile We had good old fashioned pub grub this weekend when we visited Witheridge for Iron Man Race.

Overall, the meal was lovely. The waitress was helpful and knowledgeable. The cook/manager came out to see us and make sure all of us (10) were happy.

4 star ratingGood food, well presented although portion sizes a little on the small size for the price Had lunch in the cosy bar last week with relatives. The food was well presented and tasty although for the cost, some of the meals were a little on the small size.

5 star ratingGood Home Family Cooking Andy and his Staff, have successfully built a strong foundation for this Pub/Restaurant, by offering great food, great drink, and great hospitality. Food is served Piping Hot and with a smile, nothing is to much trouble for the waiting staff, and there knowledge of the produce served is excellent.

5 star ratingInteresting pub with excellent food We have visited this pub on several occasions. The landlord is very welcoming and food is always excellent. Much thought has gone into the interesting and varied menu but there is the usual pub grub too. Something for everyone, meat, fish, vegetarian, Sunday roasts. Puddings very good too. The caramelised ginger and banana pancakes are to die for.

  • 5 star ratingGreat food and staff This is a very nice village inn with a nice menu that has a few different dishes on it to the normal fare. I had the hake on a bed of sweet chilli vegetables which was very nice indeed. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. There are two main eating areas, the bar and in the restaurant. The restaurant is nice and well finished. I can definitely recommend eating here.

5 star ratingSpectacular steak We had amazing food at the Mitre. Best steak medalions around and the scallop starter was cooked to perfection. Baby and buggy friendly too. Roughly £25 a head for 2 courses. Lovely meal!

5 star ratingSunday Lunch I had Sunday Lunch this week with my family. The choice of meats and vegetables is great and all well cooked and presented. The reputation this place has earned for its roasts is well deserved. I had a black cherry pavlova for desert despite not being a “dessert person”. I am now well and truly converted.

5 star ratingConsistently good food Have been several times and always had a lovely tasty meal with fresh vegetables and a very welcoming, and at times, entertaining welcome ! Highly recommended.

  • 5 star ratingExcellent food As this is one of our local pubs, I can highly recommend the food, excellent choice and as my husband is coeliac extra trouble is always taken to ensure he is informed as to what he can have. In the winter a lovely fire is always burning to add to the welcome.

4 star ratingDelicious food We had dinner here on a midweek evening. Staff were welcoming and the food was delicious. I had the venison for main course and cheese board for dessert and my partner had the ribs for main course and we both enjoyed the meal. We had to wait 25 minutes for our drinks as the waitress had forgotten them, but this did not detract from an enjoyable meal.

5 star ratingVillage setting with very good food We had our village Christmas meal here – there were around 24 of us. The meals came out together, were beautifully presented, full of flavour and with plenty of vegetables available. We were not rushed, service was very good and friendly. Have booked to go for my husband’s birthday meal.

5 star ratingBrilliant I booked this restaurant for 24 people and everyone said how excellent it was, the food, the service, the price, the atmosphere and venue. I was even allowed to chose my own menu choices comprising of 4 starters, 4 mains and 4 deserts. Really excellent, many thanks.

  • 4 star ratingLovely village pub Welcoming pub with good food. I would recommend the burger but they also have a selection of other meals including daily specials which looked good.

5 star ratingExploring Local Pubs – Found a Good’un Decided to give the Mitre a go after our local was not serving food one night…

Glad we did, food was excellent, landlord welcoming and bloody good beer.

Very happy we tried this place, will be back for more

5 star ratingGreat Local Pub The Mitre was our ‘local’ for the few days we were staying in Witheridge. We found the Inn to have a lovely cozy atmosphere and we were welcomed by the locals.

The food was of a great standard, in fact we ate there three nights in a row and found no fault with anything we ordered.

    Would definitely recommend.

  • 4 star ratinglovely -but an occasional changing menu would be nice always friendly. vintage vibe . salads and soups and cakes all fresh.newspaper available which is always welcome

5 star ratingVery nice food We ate here several times whilst holidaying nearby. Staff were very friendly and the food was lovely, I particularly loved the vegetarian lasagne. One one visit they had run out of the pudding my daughter ordered and they made her up an even better ice cream concoction which she was very happy about. Would definitely visit again if in the area.

  • 5 star ratingScrumptious Sunday lunch Omg!!! What a find. A fab roast -beef & all the trimmings followed by delicious chocolate fondant (black currant sorbet for my daughter). All delicious. Fab roasties &veggies!!
Great service. We will be back .

5 star ratingGood pub with great food We ate here 4 times over the week and it was a difficult choice as to what to eat each time. The food was excellent with a good choice of wines and beers. It had a vegan menu which my daughter loved. We found it hard to find places that catered for her diet and so we were so please that we found this place.

5 star ratingA little gem The landlord has a great sense of humour! The restaurant is spacious, airy and has interesting decorations and artefacts on the walls. The tables were beautifully laid out with proper napkins in rings.

The service was polite, friendly and efficient. There’s a good selection of drinks and delicious food. At the front of the menu there’s a brief and interesting history of the pub.

We will definitely dine there again.

  • 5 star ratingExellent food and menu Friendly local village pub with outstanding quality of food, on numerous visits we have never been disappointed by Andy and Barbaras hospitality.

4 star ratingLovely meal We enjoyed a great meal at the Mitre Inn. Lovely food and very friendly people. We were a large group and everything was just right …. despite our indecisiveness our orders were taken efficiently and with a sense of humour! Would definitely return

5 star ratingA very dog friendly pub If your dog is well behaved it is welcome at this pub. We gave them an hours notice due to poor weather yet they were happy to seat 12 people and 3 dogs. The food was fantastic and the bill was very reasonable. Will definitely eat here again before the end of the holiday. It’s a little old fashioned but that adds to the charm.

  • 5 star ratingExcellent I visited this pub with my family. I must say the service was excellent, the food gorgeous and the staff all friendly and helpful. I am on a fluten free diet but could eat most things on the menu. I would highly recommend it and would definitely return if I’m in the area.

There is a seperate restaurant which is very spacious. One interesting point the Sunday Luch menu was still reatained in the evening which a number of the family took advantage of. We wiil be back. A very enjoyable experience.

5 star ratingExcellent pub food Chose this pub on the basis of the reviews on here and weren’t disappointed – both had rump steak which were exceedingly tasty, and large portions so great value!

  • 5 star ratingGreat welcome We were a large diverse group (20 of us, 1 to 80 years old). Staff and locals alike were welcoming and accommodating, went in for a drink without booking, without issue. A few of us ordered food which was fine, and there were some very good real ales. Husband is working up excuses to return.

5 star ratingGreat SundayRoast Despite only living a few miles away, we had never stopped off in Witheridge. We have obviously missed out on the Mitre as the Sunday lunch was stunning. The food was really superb, plenty of it with lovely vegetables and top value for money. Definitely on the list for another visit.

5 star ratingFriendly A warm and friendly atmosphere and excellent red wine! The owner made a point of coming to talk to us.

  • 4 star ratingVery good pub lunch We lunched here on a wet day walking from Morchard Bishop to Knowstone.
The landlord is a very cheerful guy, serving good ales (try the Twiglet’s Tipple) and hearty food (my steak & ale pie was excellent).
    Highly recommended for fellow walkers.

5 star ratingReally good value – good quality food and big portions Very welcoming service and a very varied menu. A good choice for kids (although the portion sizes were quite big for them – check how much they are going to need before ordering).

4 star ratingLovely Sunday roast We popped in for an impromptu lunchtime drink and were so glad we did. Even though we hadn’t booked we were made welcome and found a table for lunch. The food was excellent and our only regret is that we had no room left for one of their yummy sounding homemade puddings! We will be back very soon.

  • 4 star ratingfamily meal good ambeince quit family pub average pub quality grub fitted our purpose met our reqqrments at short notice

5 star ratingExcellent food I visited the Mitre Inn twice last week with my family, both meals were excellent, great choice, cooked to perfection and good portions. The service was brilliant and the hosts and staff were very welcoming and friendly. Andy took time to speak to my grandson Oscar who is only 5 and made him feel special. My only regret is none of us had room for dessert. I would certainly recommend this pub for any occasion.

    Gill M

5 star ratingA lovely lunch A lovely lunch. Food was homemade and very tasty. Really enjoyed our visit and will be heading back soon.

  • 5 star ratingExcellent and varied menu Great choice of food including a range of meat and fish courses, vegetarian options and sumptuous puddings. The hake with roasted Mediterranean vegetables is superb followed by a very rich cheesecake with blueberry sauce

5 star ratingLog fire and great food, dog friendly Lovely warm atmosphere and not just because of the log fire, the owners and staff made us feel very welcome especially with our dog and even had dog treats for him. The food was lovely with plenty of choice on the menu and different prices to suit all budgets, a great place to go.

4 star ratingGood beer & nice food. A welcome relaxing place. A great pit-stop to taste to the real ale & satisfying food after a tiring day-trip out. Even the fish smile.

  • 5 star ratingWelcoming to humans and animals! Fabulous pub, made to feel very welcome, delicious food, great ales and absolutely delicious desserts! If you are in the area, can highly recommend

  • 5 star ratingSunday Roast Looking for a place for Sunday lunch my friend and I stopped here. Lovely atmosphere with the open fire and very friendly staff. I think this is the best Sunday Roast I have ever eaten out. Everything was cooked perfectly, a good selection of vegetables and potatoes with some great herbs. We also had a pudding and coffee which was delicious and very good value for money.

4 star ratingthe best chips Excellent food for a special night out. The chips are something else. Not priced for everyday eating.

5 star ratingFriendly, good food, brilliant for kids While staying at West Middlewick Farm Log Cabins we looked for somewhere to eat out. We tried the Mitre Inn and can totally recommend it! Such a friendly pub, helpful staff and delicious food. The children thoroughly enjoyed their meals and the ice creams afterwards, which were presented in novelty penguin cups, which they were able to take home. Wish we had found the pub (and restaurant) sooner!

  • 5 star ratingValentines meal A wonderful meal in a beautiful setting. Warm welcome and great food…one of the best steaks I’ve had in a long time.

    Hannah B

5 star ratingBrilliant Sunday Roast! If you are looking for a traditional pub with a log fire and amazing food – look no further. We had the most amazing Sunday roast today. The landlord was really welcoming and the atmosphere was so relaxed. Just what we wanted. Not forgetting the fact that the food was reasonably priced. We will be back for sure!

5 star ratingWarm welcome with fine food & drink Lip smacking lunch at The Mitre Inn accompanied by a log fire, fine red wine and top class real ale. Steak was melt in the mouth, cooked to perfection and the hake with marrow & sweet chilli sauce was just beautiful. Definitely one of the best places to eat in the area. Highly recommended.

  • 5 star ratingGreat atmosphere, great menu We were staying at the campsite down the road in mid November, so we wanted somewhere warm and dry to eat. The Mitre certainly offers that. A friendly village atmosphere with a welcoming landlord and a roaring log fire. What’s not to like? Good menu with everything available even on a quiet Thursday night, wide range of vegi, fish, and even something for the carnivores.
Certainly be back when I don’t have to drive. That Exmoor beer deserves further investigation.

    Iain J

5 star ratingGreat Vegan/Vegetarian choices We had heard that the pub did cater for vegans and vegetarians but didn’t expect such a choice on the menu.3 starters 4 main courses and 4 or 5 desserts and about the same choices for vegetarians too. The chef came out to talk to us suggesting various things and informing us about things on the main menu that could be adapted etc.
We chose the lasagne and weren’t disappointed, good sized portions with an amazing side salad.
Unlike a lot of places where you are made to feel a hindrance we were made to feel very welcome (and our 3 dogs too). Thursday night is quiz night which starts around 8.45 which was fun.

5 star ratingvery friendly we were staying at B&B nearby and decided to have our evening meal at the Mitre as we had stopped for a meal there a few years earlier as we passed through Witheridge we remembered it being very nice we were not disappointed we had a lovely meal

  • 5 star ratingThe Mitre A very warm and cosy village pub, with plenty of character. Great chatty landlord. We spent New Years Eve at the Inns fancy dress party , with live guitarist , and had a fab time. Locals very hospitable. We stayed at Southcoombe cottages less than a mile away. MANY THANKS FOR A GREAT NEW YEARS SEND OFF.

5 star ratingLovely , warm and welcoming meal just before Xmas Well done to all at the inn, for making it a lovely relaxing time.It was so nice to see feel the heat of your open fire, a wonderful evening had by us all, great food great staff.

5 star ratingIt’s always a pleasure! I am a relative newcomer to the village however I must say from the very first time I set foot in the Mitre both Andy and Barbara have made me feel like one of the locals. As a family we visit on a regular basis and nothing is too much trouble. We recently got married in the local church and a few of our friends popped in for a quick drink before the service. The comments from each and every one of them was what a warm welcome they received and how nice it was to have a such a great pub in the village that we lived in. Never a true word has been spoken. Thanks Andy and Barbara.

  • 5 star ratingA hidden gem in North Devon! My husband & I had a long weekend recently in Devon and were recommended the Mitre Inn by our B&B. We ended up eating there 3 nights in a row! Food was fantastic, lovely cosy atmosphere & great host/pub owner. We are both veggie but they went out their way to cater for us & even had a separate vegan menu! Really great cannot highly recommend enough! Honestly do yourself a favour & go to Mitre Inn if in the area. Massive thumbs up!

5 star ratingFantastic family run pub in the heart of the Devonian countryside My partner and I stayed at the pub during May. The weather was lovely (you can never rely on the english summer!) and the pub was busy and extremely well presented and the service was excellent. We stayed for a short three night break and the bed and breakfast was very well priced and the accommodation facilities were excellent. We have to say the food was fantastic! Overall our stay was very nice and we would definitely return again. Thank you to all the staff, especially Andy & Barbara.

5 star ratingAlways enjoy The Mitre We are regular visitors to The Mitre, and it is always a good experience. Love the food, love the atmosphere.

  • 5 star ratingGreat place to eat and drink with friendly staff We live locally to the mitre and quite often eat and drink there, as most locals do. Excellent food. Great beers, and a good place to chill. We find the landlord and landlady very welcoming.

4 star ratingSunday Lunch We enjoyed a lovely roast beef lunch in front of a roaring fire on a particularly wet Sunday. We were unsure about visiting, having read previous reviews, but everyone was very friendly and helpful. Great food, good prices and cosy atmosphere – definitely returning soon.

4 star ratingThe Mitre – Lovel Pub Good food and landlord who likes to chat! Lovely village feel & in a cosy country pub.

  • 4 star ratingFriendly welcome with good food We’d been staying in some cottages 1/2 mile from the pub and given it was the only option in the village we gave it a try. The landlord was a friendly fellow and was had a bit of a chat over a pint whilst the kids were giving the pub cat some fuss. Ordered homemade burgers and chips for lunch one day and duck and venison for an evening meal another. Good, locally sourced food, nice ales and family friendly. Would recommend to others.
